Skin Type - How to Find Yours?

Skin Type - How to Find Yours?

You’ve heard skin has a “type.” How do you know what your skin type is, though? It is really very simple to determine, but essential to know so you use the right cosmetic products for the best results.

What Are The Different Skin Types?

  • Oily – the sebaceous glands beneath your skin are supposed to keep skin moisturized. However, if they become overactive the excess oil will set on your face clogging up pores, making it impossible to keep makeup in place and lead to acne.
  • Dry – the sebaceous glands are lazy if you have this type of skin. There is not enough moisture retention in the outer epidermis leading to dull, flaky skin that makes wrinkles and other blemishes appear more prominently.
  • Combination – this type of skin is a double whammy of oily in one area of the face, dry and flaky on other parts of the face. The oily areas are most often in the T-zone, across your forehead, down your nose to your chin. The dry parts are often your cheeks.
  • Normal – hurray for those people whose skin is balanced! (Secretly we envy and hate you a little)

What’s Your Type?

To determine your skin type first wash your face completely clean and pat it dry. Now it’s a waiting game for at least an hour. When time’s up take a clean piece of tissue and pat your face gently on the forehead and then maybe the chin.

If your skin feels comfortable, but there is a residue on the tissue, you have oily skin.

If you skin feels tight and uncomfortable, you have dry skin.

If you blot your chin and there is residue, but flaky and tight feeling on your cheeks, you have combination skin.

If your face feels perfectly fine, no dry flakiness, no residue, well lucky you Miss Normal Skin.

Now What?

Now that you have determined your skin type you can create a beauty routine to take the best care of it with the right products.

Oily people; keep your face clean and look for water-based, oil free products that say non-comedogenic on the packaging.

The dry skin people should limit shower time and use richly hydrating products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid which pulls moisture to the skin. Avoid anything with retinol or alcohol because they will make the problem worse.

Combination skin is the toughest to treat. You have to be careful where you place your products. Find those that are specifically formulated for oily skin. They should hydrate but be oil-free.
